Early Game
Opening Locks With No Skill
One of the most reassuring facts about the Gothic 1 Remake: you do not need any lockpicking skill to open a chest. The puzzle always has a solution. A low skill only means a wrong move is more likely to cost you a pick โ so the whole trick, early game, is simply not making wrong moves.
It is easy to assume a locked chest is gating you behind a skill you haven't trained yet. With the remake's lock puzzle, that is not how it works. Let's clear up what your skill does and does not do, then get the chest open.
Skill does not lock you out
The remake's locks are a connected plate puzzle: bring every pin to the centre hole (slot 4) and the lock opens. That solution exists at every skill level. An untrained character and a Master face the exact same puzzle with the exact same answer.
What a low skill changes is your margin. Untrained, a pick is fragile โ a single move that pushes a pin past the edge snaps it, and you may not get the lock to forgive the mistake. So the cost of guessing is high. The puzzle is not harder; the penalty for error is. (For the full skill breakdown, see the lockpicks & skill guide.)
The no-skill method, step by step
- Bring a few picks anyway. Even with a perfect plan, having two or three spare removes the pressure. Pick them up from traders and loot as you explore.
- Read the lock before touching it. Note where every pin starts (its hole number, 1โ7), left to right.
- Map the connections carefully. Slide one plate a single step, watch which other plates move and which way, then slide it back. Do this for each plate. This is the step that actually protects your picks, because it reveals the chain reactions before they bite.
- Plan a route that never touches an edge. Any pin already on slot 1 or 7 is one wrong move from a snapped pick โ directly or through a connection.
- Or let the solver do steps 4โ5 for you. Enter the starting pins and the connection map into the solver and follow the sequence it returns. It only ever moves pins within slots 1โ7, so it cannot hand you the move that breaks a pick โ which is exactly what makes it ideal for a low-skill character with few picks to spare.

Why the solver matters most when your skill is lowest
It is a little counter-intuitive: the higher your lockpicking skill, the less you strictly need a solver, because picks survive your mistakes and the lock forgives you. The lower your skill, the more a single wrong move hurts โ so a guaranteed pick-safe sequence is worth the most precisely when you have the least skill and the fewest picks. Early game is where the Gothic Lockpicker solver saves you the most resources.
Should you train lockpicking at all?
It is still worth investing in eventually โ a trained skill stops a broken pick from resetting the lock, and Master level turns a broken pick into a simplifiedlock by removing a connection. But none of that is a prerequisite for opening chests now. Train it because it is convenient, not because you are blocked without it.
