Why Your Lockpick Keeps Breaking

Almost nobody snaps picks in the Gothic 1 Remake because the puzzle is hard. They snap them because of one rule that the game never spells out: a pin pushed past the edge breaks the pick instantly. Once you understand that rule β€” and how connected plates trip it for you β€” broken picks basically stop.

The lock puzzle asks you to bring every pin to the centre hole, slot 4 of seven. (If that part is new, start with the lockpicking guide.) The trap is everything that happens on the way there.

The rule: the edge is a wall

Each pin lives in one of seven holes, numbered 1 to 7. Those holes do not wrap around. When a pin is already on the outermost hole β€” slot 1 on the left or slot 7 on the right β€” and you slide it one more step in that same direction, there is nowhere for it to go, and the lockpick breaks on the spot. There is no warning beep and no second chance; the move that would leave the board is the move that snaps the pick.

That is the entire durability mechanic. Picks are not on a timer and they do not wear down from normal use β€” a pick is lost the moment a move tries to shove a pin off the edge.

The real culprit: chain reactions

If the edge were the whole story, you would simply never move a pin off the end and never break a pick. What makes it dangerous is that plates are connected. Sliding one plate drags its linked plates along with it, and the link directions are not obvious. So the killer scenario is this:

  • A linked pin is already sitting on slot 7 (or slot 1).
  • You slide a different plate β€” one you think is perfectly safe β€” to fix its own pin.
  • Through the connection, that move pushes the edge pin one step further off the end, and the pick snaps before your move even completes.

You never touched the plate that broke. That is why broken picks feel random and unfair until you see the wiring: you were not moving a pin, you were moving a whole web of pins, and one of them had no room left.

How to stop snapping picks

  1. Map the connections before you commit to anything. Slide each plate one step, watch which others move and in which direction, slide it back. Now you know which moves are dangerous before you make them.
  2. Watch the pins already on an edge. Any pin on slot 1 or 7 is a live trap. Before any move, ask whether it pushes an edge pin further out β€” directly or through a connection.
  3. Solve toward the centre, not the edges. The goal is slot 4, the middle. Sequences that drift pins toward the centre have far more room to manoeuvre than ones that pin everything against the walls.
  4. Let the solver guarantee it. The Gothic Lockpicker solversearches only states where every pin stays inside slots 1–7. A move that would push a pin off an edge is never part of a returned solution β€” so following a computed sequence is mathematically incapable of breaking a pick. That is the difference between β€œcareful” and β€œcannot fail.”

If you do break one

With a trained lockpicking skill a broken pick no longer resets the lock, so you can pick up where you left off. At Master level a break even removes one of the lock's connections, which makes the remaining puzzle simpler β€” but it also means the lock has changed, so re-read it (or re-enter it into the solver) before continuing.
